Research project Plabutschtunnel

28 September 2004

„Smoke is spreading throughout the tunnel with breathtaking speed. Wads of smoke take sight and orientation. Breathing is getting hard. Tensed mood is turning into nervousness. Within a moment everyone is covered with black, pungent smoke. But only a few seconds later it seemingly vanishes into thin air. The electronically operating exhaust system recognizes the flow situation and takes the smoke through the destined shaft out of the tunnel.“

ORF reported on this spectacular scenario in the broadcast “Modern Times” on 24th of September 2004. For a research project a fire in the Plabutschtunnel was simulated, threateningly realistic. However, not the fire is the greatest danger – but the smoke produced by the fire is.

This experiment shows which dangerous situations occur with fire in a tunnel, how effective our filtration plants and FIRECURTAINS avert these dangers and how reasonable and important modern exhaust systems in road tunnels are.

Cooperation partners

In cooperation with the University of Technology in Graz (TU Graz) we developed our ECCO-filter for the most effective exhaust air treatment in road tunnels. As a pilot project our system was put in operation in the Plabutschtunnel for over a year and demonstrated the efficiency and the practical usage our filter systems once more.

Furthermore this project was supported by the ASFINAG, the states Upper Austria, Salzburg and Styria as well as the Traffic Research Institute of Austria.
